Christopher Bennie is a New Zealand born artist currently living and working in Brisbane, Australia. He makes videos using a photographic, point and shoot aesthetic that often document everyday occurrences and events.
Bennie graduated from the Queensland College of Art in 2002 with first class honours. Prior to that he attended the Otago School of Art in Dunedin, New Zealand before moving to Australia in 1999. Since graduating Bennie's work has been shown at State and National Graduate exhibitions- Freshcut 2002 and Hatched 2003 respectively.
His work has been included in important national exhibitions including Savvy: New Australian Art, at the QUT Art Museum and All that Glitters: Contemporary Visions of the Gold Coast , at the Gold Coast Art Gallery. In 2004, Museum of Contemporary Art curator, Elizabeth Ann MacGregor, awarded his 23-minute video Mothership runner-up in the 2004 Conrad Jupiter's Art Prize .
Recent highlights include the inclusion of his video Name That Tune in the exhibition +Plus Factors held in conjunction with the 2006 Commonwealth Games and the Melbourne Festival at the Australian Center of Contemporary Art. And Transit-Lounge, a three week residency in Berlin. Bennie is currently working toward a doctorate of visual art at Griffith University and has been awarded a Griffith University Postgraduate Scholarship.
